National Institute of Technology, Silchar, commonly known as NIT Silchar, was established in 1967 as Regional Engineering College, Silchar, and was converted into a National Institute of Technology with Institute of National Importance status in 2002 under the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007. It is the primary technical institute of its kind in the northeastern region of India, offering undergraduate and postgraduate programs across computer science, electronics and communication, electrical, mechanical, civil, chemical, and other engineering disciplines as well as sciences and humanities. Admission to its B.Tech programs is through JEE Main.
